Help Your Loved Ones Beat the Post-Holiday Blues

Help Your Loved Ones Beat the Post-Holiday Blues

A family enjoying time with their grandmother.

January 10, 2023

The holiday season can be a joyful time for many, filled with traditions, celebrations and quality time with loved ones. However, for some people, especially our older loved ones, the holidays can sometimes be a difficult and isolating time. The post-holiday period can be particularly challenging, as the sense of excitement and togetherness that the holidays bring can dissipate once they are over. This can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness and sadness, known as the “post-holiday blues”. At Heather Glen Senior Living, we are always doing what we can to help our residents through any difficult times in their lives—so if you have a senior loved one who is struggling with the post-holiday blues, there are a few steps you can take to help them cope and find joy in the new year.

Reassure your loved ones

First and foremost, it’s important to recognize that the post-holiday blues are a common and normal reaction to the end of the holiday season. Remind your loved ones that they are not alone in feeling this way, and assure them that these feelings will pass. Encourage them to be patient and take care of themselves as they adjust to the return of their regular routine.

Find ways to stay social

One way to alleviate the post-holiday blues is to stay active and engaged. Encourage your loved ones to continue participating in activities they enjoy, whether that’s going for walks, joining a club or group or pursuing a hobby they’ve always been interested in. Staying active and social can help lift their mood and provide a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Keep on top of your health

It can also be helpful to focus on self-care and prioritize mental and physical health. Encourage your loved ones to make healthy choices, such as eating well, getting enough sleep and finding ways to better manage any stress they might have.

Reach out to loved ones

If your loved one is struggling with feelings of loneliness or isolation, consider finding ways for them to connect with others. This could be through joining a social group or club, participating in activities or events in their community or even reaching out to friends and family for social support. Encourage them to get out and about, as being around other people can be an uplifting and comforting experience.

Our team is always here to help

It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to seek help if the post-holiday blues are severe or persistent. The post-holiday blues are a common and normal reaction to the end of the holiday season, and they can be especially challenging for our older loved ones. If you have someone in your life who is struggling with the post-holiday blues, these steps can help them cope and find joy in the new year.
